Laganas Zakynthos: The huge beach of Laganas is the most popular and cosmopolitan resorts of Zakynthos located 9 km north of the main town. The settlement lies around the natural bay which is full of sunbeds and umbrellas, toilets and canteens.
Plenty of water sports facilities are offered to visitors like beach bars, snacks bars and seaside taverns overlooking the beach.
Laganas Beach is located on the island of Zakynthos (aka Zante) in the Ionian Sea of western Greece. The island of Zakynthos is a growing tourist destination in Greece located about 20 kilometres west of the Greek Peloponnese mainland and 249 kilometres west of Athens, the capital.
Laganas Zante is located about 8 kilometres (16 minutes by car) south of the capital of the island, Zante TownThe beach is long, sandy and one of the most popular beaches on the island of Zakynthos. It is a fantastic beach and family friendly.In the centre it is organised with sunbeds and the sea is shallow out to around 100 metres so small children can be safe.
During the months of July and August, the centre of the beach can get crowded but is quieter at each end. Laganas sits in the middle of a large natural bay with Visilkos peninsula lying to the east.
An attraction of Laganas is the migration of the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Each year during the months of June, July and August the turtles migrate to the Bay of Laganas to lay their eggs on the beach. This is a protected beach which is watched over by ecologists at all times.Noisy water sports are banned at Laganas due to the nesting turtles but snorkelling and scuba diving are allowed. You may also be able to rent a pedalo but be careful not to disturb these beautiful creatures as they are a protected species.
